CHARLO AND CENTENO TO CONTEST WBC INTERIM TITLE
Jermall Charlo and Hugo Centeno will clash on March 3 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, for the World Boxing Council middleweight Interim belt.
It’s on the same card during which the WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, will make his seventh defense against the Cuban Luis “King Kong” Ortiz.
In his debut in the middleweight division, Charlo knocked out Jorge Sebastian Heiland, in an elimination bout as part of his quest to challenge WBC champion Gennady Golovkin. But with Golovkin heading for a rematch with “Canelo” Álvarez on May 5, Charlo and Hugo Centeno Jr. were ordered by the WBC to dispute the interim title.
“Since my last fight, I had the opportunity to work on improving my boxing. I have the same feeling I had before winning my first world title. I want to be the WBC middleweight champion and I only think about getting into the ring,” said Charlo, the twin brother of WBC super welterweight world champion Jermell Charlo.”
Centeno (26-1, 14 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif, said : “I’m excited about this opportunity, Charlo is a great fighter with a lot of talent. It’s going to be an interesting test, of who’s the smarter fighter on the night. “
