The attendance for tonight’s fight is: 7,628 : ERROL SPENCE (Additional From TV Broadcast)
“I thought it was going to be a later knockout to tell you the truth, but Algieri is a tough fighter and I thank him for this opportunity.
“He tempted me a little bit but he didn’t push me into deep waters. I was prepared for everything he came with.
“I think I’m the number one contender for Kell Brook. Kell Brook knows what time it is. We gotta get in the ring and fight. (I want) Danny Garcia and all the rest of the welterweight champions. I want them all.
“We’ve seen in previous fights that he would go for the overhand punch and he would lean in a lot and when he came back up I would hit with the left hook.
“He kept ducking and I went to the body. He kept ducking and I met him with the left hook. We saw that when he fought Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, and he would look at the floor when he came up and I would catch him with a blind punch. Those are the ones that hurt him the most.
“It means a lot (to fight in New York). This is where I was born and where my family is from on both sides, and it meant a lot fight in front of my daughter who got to see me fight for the first time. Tomorrow I get to see my grandma and my grandma will meet her great-granddaughter for the first time.
“I didn’t take too much punishment and we will probably take off two or three weeks and get back in the gym.”
“I was talking to my coach John David Jackson about it. I didn’t stick with each game plan. There were a couple of different game plans, a couple routes I could have gone. I was switching between two different game plans. If you do anything half way, it works none of the way.
“Not taking anything away from him. He’s a hungry young lion. He will be a great champion one day. He brought some good stuff tonight. He stayed composed and that was a big part of it. I caught him with some good shots that he definitely felt. He caught me as I was switching in between strategies.
“I always want to put on a great performance, not just for the fans. I hope that people can appreciate me and how hard I worked and what I brought from the fight.
“I don’t want to take anything away from this young hungry lion, he did a great job. I trained really hard for this fight. I want to talk to my family and talk to my team. It’s back to the drawing board. I still feel like I’m getting better and better. I just need to settle down and do my homework.”
“I just wasn’t sticking to the style and the strategy like I should have. We had a couple different styles that we were going to show him and I never stayed in one style long enough to be effective.
“I don’t want to make any injury excuses because the kid did a great job, but I felt something tweak. I just stepped on it and the outside of the knee buckled a little.
“It was a great opportunity for me and I wish I had taken more advantage of it.
“I’m going to talk to my team and do my homework. I have to fine-tune a couple of things and get back to my winning ways.”
Errol Spence Jr.
“It meant a lot to get the stoppage. I did something Manny Pacquiao couldn’t do, nor Amir Khan. That shows where I’m at in the welterweight division. Everyone wanted to see what I could do against a proven fighter and I blew him out of the water.
“My family doesn’t get to see my fight live a lot so it was great for my Long Island family to be here and watch me put on a great show. Seeing the looks on their faces was amazing.
“It was pretty one-sided, I felt. I started slowly. He said he was going to take me to deep waters so I wanted to pace myself.
“I want a title fight next. Hopefully, it’s Kelly Brook, I’m his mandatory and I want him
“I don’t see how I lost. I was the aggressor. He was holding and the referee should have deducted points. Either way, I want a rematch.
“If he believes he could beat me again. He should give me the rematch. I want it as soon as possible.
“He didn’t do anything that bothered me. I was doing my thing. I should have listened to my coach more though and I would have stopped him.
“The fans told me I won so hopefully I’ll get back on the big stage again.
“He has more amateur experience than me but what I showed is heart. If he feels like he beat me, give me a rematch. This time come to my home.”
“He punched with me and caught me coming in. He sat back a lot. I knew after the second round knockdowns that I had to get rounds back and go get him. He’s a smart fighter. He caught me.
“I’m just disappointed. I knew I just had to work. The corner kept telling me to go the body more in the later rounds.
“I knew I hurt him a few times with good shots. I was just fighting. Trying to win. That’s what champions do. I wanted to be a three-time champion and I took my shot at it.
“I started to get in a rhythm and adapt to his style. I’ve been down before. I knew I had to go at this guy.
“There was a head butt in the third or fourth round that started the growth on my head. But I’m a warrior and a champion. That stuff doesn’t bother me. If a missile hit me, I’d keep going.
“I feel good. I just don’t want to be that champion that is getting used for a record builder. I’ll talk with my team and figure out the next step.”
“The plan from the beginning wasto hit him with the left hand and you could tell I was hitting with full power. I couldn’t hit that hard against Marco Huck because of my injury and now I’m hoping to keep that power up in my next fight.
“Power and precision is my trademark. That’s always been my game. I was a little bit reluctant because of the surgery but I got more comfortable as the fight went on.
“The fans were my motivation throughout the fight. I just wanted to give them more and more. I want to thank everyone who came and watched me.
“My promoters will decide my next opponent. But I’ll say this, it’s going to be a short vacation and then I’m back in the gym.”
