The Boxing desperation status
I was recently watching a video in which James DeGale was engaged in a boxing argument with a fan. The fan was demanding DeGale to call Ward or GGG out in front a camera. DeGale pointed out that Ward and Golovkin were not on his division and that he is a champion and therefore he didn’t have to call nobody out, but stated that he was willing to fight anybody.
The fan kept pressuring DeGale to call Ward or Triple G out if he really wanted to fight the best out there. Although the fan was a little out of the line, he might have brought up a good point of what is happening in the sport of boxing now in days.
This funny little incident between DeGale and this fan for me brings up the desperation that we (real boxing fans) are having now in days due to we are willing to see the best possible matches out there. This year 2016, I don’t see any relevant match already confirmed/signed besides Thurman vs Porter (which is an important match within the welter weight).
Where are the fights that we really want to see? Where are the Canelo vs GGG, Kovalev vs Stevenson, Santacruz vs Lomachenko, Chocolatito vs Estrada, Wilder/Ortiz/Fury, Crawford/Broner/Postol and many more that can be made? We are getting very tired to hear the same excuses over and over that boxing is a business and the fights are made only if it makes sense economically.
We do understand that every sport is a business, but we are the ones that pay for the fights, we are the followers of the sport and we are in fact the “consumer’’ and we deserve better.
I am a witness of how real boxing fans are still talking and debating fights from the past or future dream matches that we only can dream of due to we understand that the “WARS” between promotional companies such as: Golden Boy/Top Rank versus PBC promotion have the best matches out there impossible to be made.
In the meantime the UFC keeps growing up and putting their best fighters to fight each other and bringing in more fans to the sport. I know that the boxing fans would say that boxing has been out there for years and the UFC will never beat our sport. If we keep saying the same over and over and paying for these irrelevant matches, the promoters will continue hurting the sport that we love so much.
It is time that we as “FANS” step up and start demanding for the best matches out there. It is time that we as consumers get the best product. In the past the promoters used to work for the boxers, now the boxers work for the promoters. Then, let’s target the promoters and the boxing organizations and demand them to give us the fights that we want to see. It is time to wake up and stop be conformist with these irrelevant matches. It is time to get out from the “Desperation Zone”
